Selective Answering

Before the advent of caller ID, everytime the phone rang, the excitement and the suspense to know who is calling would live, till you actually answered the phone. But now, things have changed.

Five step process in answering calls on your cell phone
1. Phone rings
2. Look at the caller ID to see who is calling
(ugghhh it is the irritating friend again, someone you are not in mood to talk to, number not in your phone book, private/unidentified number calling)
3. Don't answer, let it go to your voicemail
4. Call up your voice mail, listen to the message to know the reason
5. Call back only if the reason was appealing enough.

Do you selectively answer calls as well?

  • I used to do it. Not anymore as the only people who calls me these days are the one I wait to talk to.

  • Hahhaa..ROS, u r so right. If I am not careful, entire evenings can pass on the phone :-) And some days, I want just that :-)

    An unknown or private number always makes me hesitant, so mostly, I let it go to the Voicemail. There was a point in time I used to get a lot of telemarketer calls which I abhored, and although they have reduced, that fear still remains.
    :-))

  • one of my freiends lost his phone... i cant see his happiness...

    he says: its an awesome feeling, no one calls you and you call him/her when ever you want to... no one can ever disturb you... you are now like a king...

    i guess... rather than answering phones i would like to hide my phone and see what is the fun.. :-)

  • I do it all the time. In fact, the most annoying call I used to get was from Airtel Tring which played a pre-recorded message in Kannada about how you should get Hello Tunes for your cell. Fortunately, the call always comes from the same number so I have saved the number as "F*ckers" and I don't have to listen to that stupid msg anymore. Sadly, people trying to sell you a credit card call you from different numbers everyday and you end up answering atleast few of those calls.

    I see now why you never pick up my calls ;). I have the known numbers in different groups and with different ring tones...so if its work related call after 5ish I wont even bother looking...yeah Thank God for caller ID's.:)Cheers!!

  • On my home phone, i keep getting these phone calls that are actually from a fax machine. It calls like ten times in a row. When i pick up, it goes "beep... beep... beep..." And the sucky part is, i cant *69 (or is it 59?) to tell them to leave me alone, cuz its a fax and cant be called back.

    first time it happened, i thought it was the Mothman. (if you've ever seen "The Mothman Prophesies" that will make sense.)

    @raj:
    True, credit card companies, banks etc call you from different numbers thats why I let it go to voicemail, and most of the times they dont leave any message which makes me certain that it wasn't anything important :)

    @sayesha:
    //Hope "irritating friend" is not reading this! ;)

    lol...if he/she is he better get the message :)

    @vikram:
    // divert my Professor's calls to the voicemail too

    lol...my prof would be so many ideas only after he reached home, he would call at strange hours. At first I would answer them but later I let it go on voicemail too. He thankfully got the message and started emailing me.
